Chapter Fourteen

You girls had better have your homework finished by dinner,” Catherine called from the kitchen.

Aspen froze mid-channel change and stared toward the sound. “How long until dinner?!”

“About forty-five minutes,” Catherine said, poking her head into the doorway. “Why, do you have a lot left?”

Aspen’s stomach churned. “Allofit,” she said, annoyed at Remington’s snort of amusement.

“All of it? It’s seven o’clock and you haven’t even started your homework?” Catherine asked.

“I…” Aspen didn’t even know what to say.

“Well, if you want to eat, get on it,” Catherine said, gesturing toward Aspen’s backpack.

Remington snickered. “Mine’s done. I’ll just be watching some TV while you slave away. Give me the remote.”

Aspen looked at her pitifully. “Help me,” she said, unzipping her backpack and taking out her notebook.

“I don’t think so.”

“Please? I have science homework and I don’t understand it.”

“How do you know that if you haven’t even started it?”

“Because I don’t understand science. And you’re getting an A, aren’t you?”

“I’d better be getting an A,” Remington said, her eyes narrowing. As if Aspen’s mere mention of an A meant that there might be another grade lurking somewhere.

Aspen opened her textbook and flipped through it until she got to the part she was supposed to be learning. “This. What the hell does it mean?”

“What does what mean?” Remington asked, glancing at the page.

“All of it!”

Rem leaned over closer to the text. “What is a chemical bond?” she read. “It is a bond between electrons from different atoms. The valence electrons on the outer shell are the only electrons involved in chemical bonding. When two atoms get close enough together, the valence electrons of one atom interact with the protons of the other atom, and vice versa. When the electrons and protons meet, they induce a chemical reaction that results in two or more atoms being bound together.” Remington looked at her.

“I have no idea what you just said.”

Rem’s eyes widened. “None?”

“Atoms have shells?”

“I—yes. They have layers of shells.”

“And what. I have no idea.”

Remington took her notebook and drew a picture of an atom. “This is the center. It’s called the nucleus. Think of it as the sun.” She pointed to the first ring around the nucleus. “This is the first shell. Think of it as Mercury, orbiting the sun.”

“The planet, I’m assuming.”

“Yes, the planet.” Rem pointed to the outer shell. “This is the outer shell. Think of it as Venus, orbiting the sun, farther away than Mercury.”

“Got it.” At least she understood the order of the fucking planets.

“Now, on the outer shell, whatever electrons are there are called valence electrons, and they can be used for bonding to other atoms. So, the people living on Venus have social skills.”

Aspen laughed but nodded. That made sense.

“The people living on Mercury are dull and boring, and don’t bond with anyone. When their universe meets another universe, they do nothing, they just go about their business as it serves their own universe. They’re the electrons on the inner shell or shells. When their atom meets another atom, they do nothing, they just sit there.
